The problem
Trades and small service businesses miss a large share of calls during jobs. Most callers don't leave a voicemail; they try the next name on the list. By the time you call back at lunch, the job is gone.
Why it works
Most business phone systems can already send an automatic reply to a missed call; the work is writing messages that sound like you, get the useful details (what, where, how urgent) and don't promise anything you can't keep. A chatbot is good at drafting and tightening those messages. Sending stays inside your phone system's own auto-reply, which you control.
Step by step
- Check your phone provider supports missed-call auto-text (most VoIP apps do; some need a paid plan).
- Write the first text: who you are, that you'll call back, a booking link, and one question for urgent jobs.
- Write a short follow-up for replies that ask about price or availability, used by a person.
- Turn on the auto-text only during working hours; use a different message after hours.
- Log missed calls and replies; call back in order of urgency.
- Review a week of replies and tighten the wording.
Pitfalls to avoid
- Texting without consent rules: US numbers need business texting (A2P 10DLC) registration with most providers, and opt-out wording ("Reply STOP").
- Never quote a price or a time slot in an automatic text.
- Don't auto-text numbers you've blocked or existing customers mid-dispute; use your provider's exclusion list.
- Emergency trades: tell callers to phone again or call 911 for gas leaks or flooding, not to wait for a text.

I run a [TRADE] business in [AREA]. When I miss a call, my phone system can send one automatic text. Write me: 1. The automatic text (under 300 characters): my business name, that I'm on a job and will call back within [X hours], my booking link [LINK], one question to understand the job (what's wrong and the address), and "Reply STOP to opt out". 2. An after-hours version that says when I'll call back and what to do in an emergency. 3. Three short replies I can send by hand when someone answers: asking about price, asking for the earliest slot, and an emergency. Rules: friendly, plain words, no exclamation marks, no promises about price or exact times. Then list anything in these messages that might break texting rules where I am, so I can check it.
