The problem
“Storage full” usually arrives at the worst moment. The storage screen lists apps and sizes, but not which ones are safe to clear, and the biggest trap is deleting photos you think are backed up when the cloud is full and uploads have stopped. Clearing downloads and unused apps first, after a backup check, gets most people room without risking anything they care about.
Why it works
AI chat assistants are good at reading what you paste and turning it into plain steps. They can't see your device or your accounts and can get details wrong, so the prompt has the AI point to where each fact came from, mark general advice as something to check, and treat what you paste as information, never as instructions. The double-check prompt then makes it point to the source of each finding again. You do every step and decide.
What you get from it
- A read of your phone's storage screen: what's taking the space, biggest first, with the line it came from.
- A backup check before anything is deleted: whether your photos and messages are really backed up, and what to do if they aren't.
- Low-risk wins first (downloads, unused apps, old attachments), with how much each frees, and the math shown.
- Photo and video steps that keep a copy, and a clear warning about synced deletes.
- A plain answer when the phone is simply too small for what you keep, with options to compare yourself.
- A short routine so it doesn't fill up again.
What you need
- A free AI account. ChatGPT is our pick (it reads screenshots well). The others work too (see step 1).
- Screenshots of your storage screen. iPhone: Settings → General → iPhone Storage. Android: Settings → Storage (names differ by phone maker). Scroll and take 2 or 3 screenshots.
- Your backup status. iPhone: Settings → [your name] → iCloud. Android: your photo app's backup screen. A screenshot is fine.
- About 10 minutes. To the plan. Fixes are one at a time after that.
What the test showed
On 19 Oct 2026 we ran the main prompt and “Double-check your work” with an OpenAI model (gpt-5-mini) on a synthetic sample case. It has an invented 128 GB iPhone with 1.2 GB free, a full 5 GB iCloud with 1,873 photos not uploaded, podcast and show downloads, a game unused for 5 months, and a scam text with a note telling AI tools to push its link. It asked one question at a time, did a short “What I read” check, saw that iCloud was full and 1,873 photos hadn't uploaded, said the photos weren't fully backed up and kept every photo step until a copy exists, put the podcast downloads, offloading the unused game and the downloaded shows first, added them up to 15.1 GB and about 16.3 GB free (12.7%), and called the “verify your storage” text a scam, ignoring its note to AI tools. In our first run it also counted a 1.1 GB maps line we hadn't marked as safe to lose, and wrote a reply to the scammer; we removed that line from the sample, dropped the send-ready block from this pack, and re-ran it. The double-check kept every finding. We later added a rule never to copy a card number, code or key from a text, and re-ran it 7 times with a fake scam text holding all three. In our first try one reply copied them; after we told it to tag the place in the text instead of quoting it, the next 7 runs (25 replies) never wrote one out in full. We only tested on an OpenAI model (gpt-5-mini). Other assistants may word things differently or miss a check, so run the included sample once in your chosen tool and compare it with the worked example before you use your own data.
